Glass Repair Products and How They Work

Not all drivers realise just how dangerous a cracked windscreen can be. Despite great improvements in modern engineering which have made the glass stronger and more resistant to damage, they can still be cracked or chipped. For example, it only takes one small stone, thrown at high speed from the back tyre of the articulated lorry ahead, and you could discover that you have a small chip or crack in the windscreen. Left unresolved, this could be enough to split or even shatter the window, which would be very dangerous if you were driving at high speed on the motorway. It is particularly dangerous in winter, when the cold temperatures and ice can weaken the chip even further. As well as this risk, if it was in the wrong place it could be a reason to fail an MOT, which is every driver’s nightmare when the annual test is due.

In the past, glass repair was a big problem. Essentially, the whole window needed to be taken out, a costly and time-consuming repair that required special glass handling tools. Some people would try to save money on this by shopping around or buying a matching component from a scrapyard, but it was still a job that required some skill and a measure of confidence.

Fortunately, modern glass repair options have mean that windscreen glass repair need not be expensive, difficult or time consuming. At JT Handtools, we provide the car window repair solutions that you need to keep your vehicle in good condition and avoid unexpected surprises.

The key to a good repair is having good-quality resin & professional standard equipment. At the end of the day, the repair is only worthwhile if it makes a strong filler for the crack or chip, and if the visibility is good enough to pass an MOT. At JT Handtools, we only sell premium products which will produce a professional quality finish.

The first step in the repair is to ensure that the chip is cleared of any debris, so that nothing is stuck in there after repair. When it is clean, a high quality car window resin is carefully injected to fill the mark. Because the resin is clear, it replicates the glass whilst providing a waterproof, long lasting surface. A UV light system is then used to cure the resin. This ensures that the hardening takes place over minutes, rather than hours. Once it is set, the surface needs to be finely polished, using an appropriate filler polish which will smooth the resin into the level of the windscreen without damaging the surrounding glass.
